Disabled Persons Parking (Scotland) Bill - Public Consultation

I would like to draw your attention to a members’ bill, which has been lodged by my colleague, Jackie Baillie MSP.

Jackie’s bill aims to crackdown on the abuse of disabled parking bays and make all disabled parking bays enforceable. This would mean that those caught abusing them would face a fine.  At present, most disabled parking bays are courtesy only and therefore anyone can park in them without the risk of being penalised.

A consultation seeking views on the proposals has been launched and I would urge local organisations, constituents and businesses to take part in the consultation and make sure their views are considered as part of the process.

Abusing disabled parking bays can cause real difficulty to disabled drivers. I know of cases where disabled drivers have been forced to wait hours to get into an accessible parking space at a local supermarket because an able-bodied driver has chosen to abuse a designated space.  I believe this type of abuse is unacceptable and disrespectful to disabled drivers.

I would appeal to anyone who has or does abuse disabled parking spaces to think about the implications before they do so.

If you are interested in taking part in the consultation, please call my office on 0141 270 1890 and I will send you out a consultation document.  Alternatively, the document can be accessed on the Scottish Parliament’s website at:  www.scottish.parliament.uk/business/bills/membersBills.htm
