Glasgow Museums holds one the UK’s largest and finest collections of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish old masters many of which are stored at the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre. This tour will look closely at some of these paintings and the collectors that so generously gave them to the city. Works by major artists such as Abraham van Beijeren, Bril, Hobbema, Eglon van der Neer, Rubens, Ruisdael and Teniers will be looked at.
Glasgow Boys: From Hornel to Howson- Caroline Currie, Learning Assistant

A group of Scottish artists, including E.A. Hornel and George Henry emerged at the end of the nineteenth century and became known as the ‘Glasgow Boys’. This tour will begin by examining their work before moving onto the more recent phenomenon of the ‘New Glasgow Boys’ who emerged in the 1980’s and will include work by Peter Howson and Ken Currie.

A chance to see examples of screen prints and lithographs by some of the main figures of British and American Pop Art such as David Hockney and Andy Warhol. This tour will also cover the highlights of the Glasgow Museums photography collection including works by Sebastiao Salgado, Andy Goldsworthy, Jo Spence, Joel Sternfeld and Patricia Macdonald.

You will find portraits of women stretching back into history in many art collections. You will find it more difficult to find examples of women considered to be ‘great artists’ prior to the twentieth century. This tour will examine representation of women in the art world and will include the work of Bessie MacNicol, Joan Eardley and Joyce Cairns.
