Catholic church stance on gay adoptions

I see the Catholic Church want their adoption agencies to be exempt from the equality law which has been passed by parliament to allow gay couples to adopt. Yet, these agencies are funded by taxpayers money.
Surely the ability to be a good parent does not rest with your sexuality? Modern marriages run into all sorts of problems and fathers are often absent. Many children can be brought up successfully by a single parent. The Catholic Church recognises that, and will allow single people to adopt, no matter their faith, non-faith, or sexuality; but they will not comply with the law about gay couples? There is no proof that being brought up in a same-sex couple arrangement is damaging to the child. Civil partnerships are recognised by law and the law has been changed to allow these couples, who are in a strong committed relationship to adopt. Frequently, they have already fostered children successfully. Children who are often very difficult to place because of disability, or sometimes the damage done to them whilst in hetrosexual homes.
The most important people in all of this are the children and if they can be given a loving caring envionment, that should be the main priority. The Catholic Church does not have a very good record for caring for children, when you look at the abuse carried out in Nazareth Houses, Magdalene Homes plus all the abusing "fathers" in the priesthood. However, they apparently have a very good record for placing children with adoptive parents. That should not change if they include the same vetting procedures to gay couples, and then only those who really care will be allowed to adopt.
